Yemen Humanitarian Appeal

’The Ongoing Crises Leaves Yemenis in a Hunger Trap and Absolute Poverty, and at the same time refugees from the torn Horn of Africa continue to rely on humanitarian assistance for survival’

Yemen is characterized by widespread poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition, unemployment, low levels of education, high gender disparities, rapid population growth and insufficient access to safe water and to land. Multiple and simultaneous shocks of events in the country have exacerbated the vulnerability of families and left millions trapped in absolute hunger and poverty.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab region, though it is ranked 133 on the Human Development Index (HDI), Ever since reunification of the country in 1990 its relative position on the HDI index has remained steady, with very slow progress towards attaining the MDG goals. At 3%, the country has one of the highest population growth rates globally, with the population expected to double in 23 years to around 40 million. This increases the demand for educational and health services, drinking water and employment opportunities. Yemen faces a severe water shortage, with available ground water being depleted at an alarming rate. The Yemeni economy is caught in a jobless slow growth cycle leading to stagnant per capita incomes and rising levels of unemployment, particularly amongst the youth and women.
Poverty is widespread, with about 42% of the population living on less than US$ 2 per day and social development indicators, such as child malnutrition, maternal mortality, and education attainment remain poor. There are also large gender disparities, with significant gaps in women’s access to economic, social and political opportunities.

Qaaf Aid has set an emergency response team for victims to assist the immediate food and medical needs of the thousands of Yemeni children affected by poverty and hunger in the North & the South of Yemen.
